“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” -Aristotle

There is an old adage that states that if you fail to plan, you are planning to fail. I’m not sure who said this, but I know it to be true. I have seen this in my own life as well as in the lives of others. If you approach life “flying by the seat of your pants” without some kind of game plan, you are bound to end up making unnecessary mistakes and not get very far. Why is that? Because productivity and progress are produced in the rich soil of routines.

A routine is defined as a sequence of actions that are regularly followed or instituted by a fixed program. Do you want to advance in your career? What is your plan? Want to lose weight? How? What is your regimen for doing so? Planning on becoming a millionaire through your business holdings? What routine business practices have you put in place in order to make your dreams a reality? Everyone wants to succeed and move forward in life, but very few ever achieve the measure of success that they imagine because they don’t have a routine or the right routine to move them from where they are to where they desire to be.

If you feel like you’re “stuck in a rut,” let me encourage you to devise a game plan (or a new one if the one you have is no longer yielding the results you desire) steeped in routine. Get up early, go to bed early, document your progress (people track and measure what they value), change your diet, develop an exercise rhythm, plan strategically, execute intentionally, study your industry from every angle, and become an expert in your field. I cannot underscore the importance of establishing your life on the foundation of good routines.

Don’t continue delaying your dreams. Devise a plan undergird by strong routines that will produce the results that you want to see. Eliminate excuses, quit feeling sorry for yourself, and remove all negative, self-defeating self-talk that seeks to cripple your progress.

You only have one life. Don’t spend it wasting time in areas that will yield little to no results. Instead, build healthy habits that will serve your goals well for years to come.

I’m rooting for you…
